How To Care for your Mounted Staghorn (Platycerium)
Share
Staghorn ferns are unique, sculptural plants that thrive when their natural growth habits are respected. With the right balance of moisture, gentle care, and protection from harsh conditions, they can live for many years and become a striking feature in any indoor or outdoor space.
General Care
- Keep away from direct sunlight.
- In summer, water your Staghorn every week by gently soaking it in a basin of water. Avoid wetting the leaves. Water it sooner if the sphagnum moss is very dry. Mist underneath the leaves if needed.
- Do not wipe off the trichomes. Trichomes are the white, dust-like substance that acts as a protective layer. They are the plant’s natural sunblock. They also retain moisture and reduce the rate of transpiration. The presence of this fuzz is generally a sign of a healthy, well-adapted plant. Avoid touching the leaves.

Shield Fronds
- Never remove, trim, or cut off brown shield fronds, as this can damage the plant.
- Shield fronds start green, grow quickly, then turn brown and dry out as they age.
- They protect the root ball, retain water, and provide nutrients to the plant as they decompose.
Fertiliser
- Use Seasol or any seaweed-based fertiliser and follow the instructions for diluting it with water. Soak your Staghorn for around 5 minutes, until the moss is soft and spongy. Gently wipe the board to remove excess water and allow it to dry.
Pests
- Pests may appear due to environmental issues, but they are very easy to eliminate. All you need is a cotton bud and rubbing alcohol.
- Dip the cotton bud in isopropyl alcohol and manually remove insects with the alcohol-soaked swab.
With consistent, gentle care and attention to its natural structure, a Staghorn fern will remain healthy and resilient for years. Respecting its fronds, moisture needs, and feeding routine is key to keeping it thriving and visually striking.
